Latinx Youth Theatre / LYT

Latinx Youth Theatre / LYT is a hub for young Latinx theatre lovers that brings together some of London’s leading theatre professionals, cultural visits and masterclasses with industry experts to help young performers and creatives develop their passion into a professional creative practice. Mixing the best of Latin American and British performing styles, this is a unique opportunity for young Latinx to nurture their talents in a safe environment, learn life skills, find their voice and share it with London’s theatre industry and the world. Growing up in that context A creative social project, as part of my obligatory military services, showed me the power of the arts when they are in direct contact with people that have less access to creative and safe spaces. From that instant and until today I have been using art in my work with a diverse range of communities, including: police, army, ex guerrilla and paramilitaries young soldiers, young people, internal displaced people, artist.

De Camino a Ti

De Camino a Ti (A Journey Within) champions the symbiosis of creativity & resilience, of storytelling & empowerment. Our project recognises the vital positive impact that engagement with creativity has on isolated individuals & marginalised communities: improved confidence, increased physical & mental wellbeing, an increased sense of belonging. Latinx womxn experience intersectional inequality. As members of migrant communities, there can be a lack of access to stable, economically viable employment; secure housing & support services e.g childcare, compounded by language barriers. Such instabilities contribute to a lack of representation in & engagement with creative opps.

Our project creates a community for these womxn to form positive social connections and develop a creative identity. Siomara’s multidisciplinary practice centres art as a site for healing. We will introduce participants to multiple mediums to explore their own experiences and amplify their voice. Participants will increase in confidence, resilience & become more creatively empowered. This will positively transmit to their wider community, increasing connectedness & civic pride. Outputs will be exhibited in a public exhibition, to platform & celebrate the participant’s stories while increasing understanding of their cultural subjectivity thereby increasing intercultural understanding. De Camino a Ti will holistically unlock creativity as a means for building resilient individuals in connected communities.
